چکیده

It is theoretically predicted that the Nernst coefficient is strongly suppressed and the thermal conductance is quantized in the quantum Hall regime of the twodimensional electron gas. The Nernst effect is the induction of a thermomagnetic electromotive force in the y direction under a temperature bias in the x direction and a magnetic field in the z direction. The quantum nature of the Nernst effect is analyzed with the use of a circulating edge current and is demonstrated numerically. The present system is a physical realization of the non-equilibrium steady state.

Quantum Nernst Effect in a Bismuth Single Crystal

We report a theoretical calculation explaining the quantum Nernst effect observed experimentally in a bismuth single crystal. Generalizing the edge-current picture in two dimensions, we show that the peaks of the Nernst coefficient survive in three dimensions due to a van Hove singularity. We also evaluate the phonon-drag effect on the Nernst coefficient numerically. Our result agrees with the ...

Effects of quasiparticle ambipolarity on the nernst effect in underdoped cuprate superconductors.

We consider the Nernst effect in the normal state of the underdoped cuprate superconductors, where recent quantum oscillation experiments have indicated the existence of Fermi surface pockets and quasiparticle ambipolarity in the excitation spectrum. Using an ambipolar d-density-wave model for the pseudogap, we predict a peak in the Nernst coefficient with decreasing temperature below the pseud...

Enhancement of the Nernst effect by stripe order in a high-T(c) superconductor.

The Nernst effect in metals is highly sensitive to two kinds of phase transition: superconductivity and density-wave order. The large, positive Nernst signal observed in hole-doped high-T(c) superconductors above their transition temperature (T(c)) has so far been attributed to fluctuating superconductivity. Here we report that in some of these materials the large Nernst signal is in fact the r...

Magnetothermoelectric response at a superfluid-Mott-insulator transition.

We investigate the finite temperature magnetothermoelectric response in the vicinity of a superfluid-Mott-insulator quantum phase transition. We focus on the particle-hole symmetric transitions of the Bose-Hubbard model, and combine Lorentz invariance arguments with quantum Boltzmann calculations. By means of an epsilon expansion, we find that a nonvanishing thermoelectric tensor and a finite t...
